White & Red

The "white man" is scary

Standing alone we see him as untrustworthy

When we hear his name,

walls go up

In groups, the white men are a threat

We have history with the white man

It tells a story of pain, trickery, abuse

He brought fire water

And it burned our minds and bodies

And somehow the colour of his skin

Is what we wish for

We look to him with fear and envy

But what about the white woman?

What happened to her?

Women are the lifeline of our people

They sacrifice and bleed

Teach, feed, labour

But the white woman is a mystery

Why don’t the history books talk about her?

I suppose it’s because the white man

erased her too

I wonder if she had power back then

Would all of this have happened?

Who am I then?

Both white and red

And a woman

Would the white man have erased me too?

But now the white man's story is changing...

The white man is

My father

My husband

My sons

My friends

There is kindness in his eyes

A softness in his heart

Love in his heart

This is the new white man

Is he you?

And who is the white woman?

Her story is clear to me now

She is my sister

She is my new mother

She is my friend

She is the daughter of my friends

She is writing a new story

She is powerful, strong, and has a voice.

She is me.

Is she you?

The white in my life is good

It’s writing new pages in the history books

A story of honour

A story of hard work

A story of friendship

Of trying, failing, and trying again.

Of asking, getting it wrong, and trying again.

Earnest, honest, willing.

The white and red live inside me

And they are walking in a good way

In harmony

And you,

Who are white, red and every colour Creator imagined

Would you walk with me?

Let’s write the good pages of history.
